Why the same carton quotes differently by lane
The divisors are not arbitrary — they encode how full a vehicle can be before weight becomes the constraint. Express aircraft earn per kilogram and turn fast, so they price space aggressively at 5,000. Consolidated air freight shares the load across more shippers and uses the IATA 6,000 standard. Ocean freight has space to burn and weight limits that matter, so LCL bills revenue tons — whichever of weight or cube is greater — at roughly one tonne per cubic metre.
The practical consequence: an airy carton is cheapest on ocean LCL (it bills its cube, which is tiny), mid on forwarder air, and most expensive per kilo on express. A dense carton inverts the ranking, because volume stops binding and express rates on actual weight compete.
Metric-domain mistakes that cost real money
- Dividing inch dimensions by 5,000. The metric divisor expects centimetres — inches under 5,000 understate volume by a factor of about 16.4 (2.54³), which turns a 25 kg quote into a nonsensical 1.5 kg that gets corrected at the hub.
- Pounds into a kilogram divisor. Weigh in kg for metric lanes; 3 lb is 1.36 kg, and mixing them moves the billable weight either direction.
- Measuring the product instead of the export carton — clearance, dunnage and double-boxing are part of what the aircraft carries.
- Forgetting that duties ride on customs value, not dimensional weight. Freight dims and customs paperwork are separate systems; confusing them produces correct-looking quotes for the wrong shipment.
- Palletized air freight: euro pallets (800 × 1200 mm) and US pallets (48 × 40 in) both occupy real cube — compute each pallet separately before the air quote arrives.

- How do I convert an imperial DIM figure to metric?
- You don't convert the number — you recompute with metric inputs. Dividing inch dimensions by 139 and dividing centimetre dimensions by 5,000 produce the same economics (139 in³/lb ≈ 5,000 cm³/kg), so measure in centimetres, divide by 5,000 for express or 6,000 for air freight, and keep the units consistent end to end.
- Do customs duties depend on dimensional weight?
