What makes 2026 the wrong year to trust a random DIM calculator is that the divisors moved: USPS switched from 166 to 139 on July 12, 2026 and began rounding every fractional inch up, and UPS extended dimensional pricing to more size tiers in January. A calculator still dividing by 166 understates every bulky parcel's billable weight — the gap surfaces later as a carrier price adjustment. - A pricing technique that bills a package by the space it occupies rather than what it weighs: length × width × height divided by a carrier divisor, compared against actual scale weight. Whichever is higher — the dimensional or the actual weight — becomes the billable weight. A 5-pound shipment in an 18×12×12 box bills at 19 pounds under USPS rules, because the box's DIM weight is higher.

- How do I calculate dimensional weight in metric?
- Length × width × height in centimetres divided by 5,000 gives kilograms for express international services from DHL, UPS and FedEx. IATA's volumetric standard for air freight is 6,000 cm³ per kg, so the same carton quotes heavier on express than on a forwarder's air consolidation — worth checking both before choosing a lane.
- Does USPS charge dimensional weight on every package?
- No. The DIM rule applies only to packages over one cubic foot — 1,728 cubic inches. A 12×12×12 box ships at its actual weight regardless of divisor. But the July 2026 rounding rule means a box measuring 11.9 × 12 × 12 inches is charged as 12 × 12 × 12, so small boxes near the line can tip over it on paper.

- Ship the smallest carton that protects the product: most of the win is box selection, not void fill.
