Machinery is the commodity family where density does exactly what shippers hope — heavy, compact equipment rates low classes and cheap hundredweight — and where the crate quietly undoes it. Classification is computed on the finished handling unit: the machine plus the skid, the crate walls, the banding and the moisture barrier, measured at the crate's exterior extremes. A machine that would rate class 55 bare can rate class 70 once its plywood box contributes weight and a foot of cube on every side.

The 2025 NMFC restructure matters here: very dense machinery that capped at class 60 under the legacy chart can now rate 55 or 50, and several mid-density classes moved.

The crate is part of the density

Crating protects the machine and taxes the class. A worked example: a 48×40×40-inch crate weighing 850 pounds computes to 44.4 cubic feet and 19.1 pounds per cubic foot — class 70. Strip the packaging contribution and the same machine at 700 pounds rates 15.75 pcf, still class 70 — but on a smaller machine the crate's weight and cube can push the shipment a full class. The practical rules:

  • Weigh the crate on a scale — never estimate from the machine's spec sheet. Packaging commonly adds 10–30% to bare equipment weight.
  • Measure the crate's exterior at the extremes, including skid runners, lifting lugs and protruding hardware. Carriers do.
  • Band and brace inside the crate rather than adding external framing where possible — external frames add cube that measures into density.
  • One crate per handling unit for classification. Multi-crate shipments compute each unit, and carriers may rate them separately.

  • Density is the default under the July 2025 NMFC rules, but many machinery listings remain commodity-specific — the NMFC item number governs, so confirm it rather than assuming the density class.
  • Residual fluids change everything: engines and equipment with oil or fuel residue can carry hazmat handling obligations that no density calculation addresses.
  • High-value machines raise liability, and liability is one of the four classification factors that can override density upward.
  • Describe the handling unit accurately — "1 crate, machine" with the density figure — because vague descriptions invite the carrier's own classification, and its version comes with a reclass fee.
  • Keep scale tickets and crate measurements on file. When an inspection disputes the class, documentation wins the adjustment reversal.

What freight class is machinery?
It depends on the crate's density. Compact, heavy items like engines and transmissions often rate class 55–50, while lighter fabricated assemblies rate 100–70. The number comes from the finished handling unit — machine plus crate — divided by its cubic feet, so packaging choices move the class.
Does the crate weight count toward freight class?

Is machinery always class 50?
No — class 50 requires roughly 50 pounds per cubic foot or more, which only the densest compact items achieve once crated. Most crated machinery lands between 70 and 55. Assuming class 50 on the bill of lading is one of the fastest routes to a reclassification fee.
Does used or refurbished machinery classify differently?
The classification rules are the same — density plus the item number plus handling factors. What changes in practice is documentation (you may lack spec weights) and condition issues: residual oils can create hazmat handling obligations, and damaged crating invites handling adjustments. Weigh and measure your actual build.
How do I avoid a reclass on machinery shipments?
Weigh the crated unit on a real scale, measure exterior extremes, compute the density, and put the resulting class and accurate dimensions on the bill of lading. Then confirm the NMFC item number with your carrier. Carriers re-inspect machinery frequently because it is heavy and misdeclaration is expensive for them — accurate paperwork is the whole defense.
