The count assumes uniform orientation per layer and no overhang — a mixed-rotation pattern occasionally squeezes in one more box, but it also breaks the stack. Add the pallet's own height (typically 5–6 in) before quoting total height to a carrier or a rack.

The chargeback math, worked
A 2,400-box PO at TI 16 × HI 5 is 30 pallets. Let five of them build over the height cap because someone stacked 6-high: that is five height-violation chargebacks, plus the DC's option to rework the pallets at a per-pallet labor fee, plus the appointment risk while the rework queue clears. The pallet calculator exists to make that failure impossible at build time — the height limit is an input, not a discovery at the dock.

Building compliant pallets
- Heavy boxes on the bottom layers, light on top, and column-stack crush-sensitive cartons rather than interlocking them — interlock is stable but concentrates load on box corners.
- No overhang includes the wrap: bulging stretch film counts at the dock as much as a protruding carton, and it corrupts the measured dimensions behind your freight class.
- Corner boards on tall or crush-sensitive loads transfer wrap tension to the structure instead of the cartons.
- Four-way entry matters at the receiving end: the DC's clamp and pallet-jack equipment assumes it, and a mis-oriented pallet stalls the unloading lane.
- Match the guide's label pattern — typically two adjacent readable sides — and tie labels to the ASN so receiving scans on the first pass.

It is a contract term in practice, even when it lives outside the purchase order.
- What pallet height do retail DCs require?

- Directly, through measurement: carriers classify on the handling unit's extreme dimensions, so a square, flush, fully-wrapped pallet produces honest dimensions and the best density class it deserves.
